The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest in history — 48 nations competing across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Here's how the format works from kickoff to the final.
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of 4. Every team plays the other 3 teams in their group once — 3 matches total. Points are awarded as follows:
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | 3 pts |
| Draw | 1 pt each |
| Loss | 0 pts |
The top 2 teams from each group (24 teams) automatically advance to the knockout round. Additionally, the 8 best 3rd-place finishers across all 12 groups also advance — giving 32 teams total in the Round of 32.
If teams are tied on points, tiebreakers are applied in this order: goal difference → goals scored → head-to-head result → FIFA ranking.
From the Round of 32 onward, it's single-elimination. Lose and you go home.
If a knockout match is tied after 90 minutes, teams play 30 minutes of extra time (two 15-minute halves). If still tied, the match is decided by a penalty shootout — 5 kicks each, then sudden death.
Matches are spread across 16 stadiums in 3 countries: 11 in the USA (including MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey for the Final), 2 in Canada, and 3 in Mexico. The Final is July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium.
Sportsbooks like Fanatics Sportsbook offer a wide range of World Cup betting markets. Understanding the odds is the first step to betting smart.
Odds in the United States are displayed in American format — either a positive (+) or negative (-) number.
| Odds | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| +150 | Underdog — team less likely to win | Bet $100, win $150 profit |
| -150 | Favorite — team more likely to win | Bet $150, win $100 profit |
| +200 | Draw — teams tied at 90 min | Bet $100, win $200 profit |
Soccer is unique because every match has three possible outcomes: home win, away win, or draw. This is called a 3-way moneyline (or 1X2). Unlike most North American sports, a draw is always on the table and often carries great value odds.
The best bettors don't just follow the odds — they look for situations where the odds don't reflect reality. A few angles worth exploring:
