It is Friday, October 16, 2026, and I am sitting here, Carlton Bear, nursing the emotional hangover from last night. The Maple Leafs dropped a 5-4 decision to Buffalo on Thursday, October 15, and frankly, it feels like the same old script. We are sitting at 3-3-2, four games back in the Atlantic Division, and while the math says we have 76 games left to turn this around, my instincts say I should prepare for the inevitable. The season is live, nothing is decided, and we are technically in the race, though 'in the race' feels like a generous term for how we looked on the ice. While the rest of the league moves on, I am left staring at the standings and wondering why I do this to myself. Tonight, the league moves forward without us, with Pittsburgh facing Colorado and Boston taking on Anaheim. It must be nice to watch hockey without feeling like your blood pressure is being weaponized against you. We have a long road ahead, plenty of time to break my heart again, and an entire season of cautious hope that will almost certainly end in the usual spectacular fashion. Someone pass the maple syrup; I’m going to need it.
